Not only is it cozy and soft but it really doesn't seem to get cold to the touch. Since most bed sets of this type are 100% cotton - the fabric is breathable, so even if temperatures climb the children still stay comfortable. Friends of mine use their flannels year round but that is too toasty in the summer for my taste.
The good news is that there is a ton of patterns to choose from. Most themed room decor now offer a fleece or traditional option. So getting everything to coordinate and match is not a problem.
But one thing that people don't consider is that winter sheet sets and comforter covers offer a great opportunity to change the look of a room for a few months out of the year. This can make the original linens last a little longer and take away some of the monotony of looking at the same decor day after day.
Often, just picking a new sheet pattern with a matching duvet cover is all that it takes. I either like to go with a neutral theme or a holiday or wintry theme. Keep in mind that in most US climates the kids flannel bedding will only be used for a few months out of the year - so if it is good quality then it should last a long time. A juvenile theme will be outgrown long before the usefulness of the sheet set expires.
However if your child is infatuated with certain characters (like my daughter is with High School Musical) then it is a small price to pay for that smile on her face.
This is a set that I found at Amazon that I think she would like. 
A favorite amongst toddler boys is the movie Cars - my cousin's son watched this movie so many times on DVD that she finally had to hide it to keep her peace of mind.
